The Solid State Lighting & Display Center (SSLDC) is focused on advancing new semiconductor-based energy efficient lighting and display technologies through partnerships with key industry leaders. The objective of the SSLDC is to provide a forum for its members – industry partners and University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) faculty and student researchers – to work in collaboration at the interface of these disciplines to address the most challenging problems in solid state lighting.
Currently, lighting consumes 22% of all electricity produced in USA. The SSLDC is developing novel technologies to achieve an efficiency target of 200 lumens/Watt (60%). The U.S. Department of Energy estimates over $98 billion in energy savings could be realized by 2020 if solid state lighting can achieve these breakthrough efficiency targets.
